Speaker Bio's
Monica Elliott, Ph.D., Professor and Associate Center Director, University of Florida – IFAS
Dr. Monica L. Elliott received M.S. and Ph.D. degrees in Plant Pathology from Montana State University and a J.D. from Nova Southeastern University. She has been with the University of Florida since 1987 and is currently a professor in the Plant Pathology Department located at the Fort Lauderdale Research and Education Center with a 70% research and 30% extension appointment. She is also Associate Center Director for the FLREC. While initially focusing on turfgrass diseases, she has shifted her research and extension programs to examine palm diseases in field nurseries and the landscape. She is senior editor of the Compendium of Ornamental Palm Diseases and Disorders and co-author of the University of Florida’s ID card deck Disorders and Diseases of Ornamental Palms.
Ed Barnard, Ph.D., Forest Pathologist & Supervisor, Forest Health Program, Florida Division of Forestry
Ed was educated at the University of Vermont (B.S.-Forest Management – 1969) and Duke University (M.S. – Forestry/Tree Physiology – 1973, and Ph.D. – Forestry/Forest Pathology – 1977). Ed was previously employed as Section Leader for Forest Pathology and Mycorrhizal Research with International Paper Company in Natchez, MS. He is currently (since 1978) Forest Pathologist with the Florida Division of Forestry and supervises the state’s Forest Health Program. He is a recognized authority in the field of Forest Pathology. He is a past member of the American Phytopathological Society (APS) and served that organization as an associate editor of Plant Disease for six years. Dr. Barnard is the recipient of many awards including the Southwide Forest Disease Workshop’s Outstanding Extension Paper Award in 1985, 1997, and 2002 and that organization’s Outstanding Research Publication Award in 1994. He has been awarded the Florida Society of American Foresters’ Stephen Spurr Award for technical contributions to Florida forestry and the Southeastern Society of American Foresters’ Award of Excellence for research contributions to Southern Forestry. In January of 2005 Dr. Barnard was presented the Southern Forest Pathologists’ Achievement Award by the Southwide Forest Disease Workshop for “outstanding career accomplishments in forest pathology in the southeastern United States”.
Joe Samnik, Consulting Arborist, Samnik & Associate, LLC, Expert Tree Consultants
Joe Samnik is a certified arborist with the International Society of Arboriculture (ISA), a consulting arborist with the American Society of Consulting Arborists (ASCA), and is licensed by the Division of Agriculture and Consumer Services (DACS), Bureau of Entomology, State of Florida. Joe is entering his 39th year of practice limited to tree consulting and the dispute resolution process. His abstracts on tree assessments were selected for presentation at four (4) International Tree Conferences. Joe is a recognized expert witness in small claims, civil, criminal, and eminent domain courts of law. He has been named as an expert witness in over 500 litigation cases including wrongful death and personal injury.

Doug Gaskill is a Pest Survey Specialist in the Cooperative Agricultural Pest Survey (CAPS) program. He plans and conducts surveys to detect high-risk exotic plant pests and diseases not known to be present in Florida and to delimit newly detected exotics. He has a bachelor’s in Environmental Science and a Master’s in Plant Pathology, and previously conducted research at the University of Hawaii and the Connecticut Agricultural Experiment Station in the fields of plant pathology and entomology.

William R. Chaney, Ph.D., Professor Emeritus of Tree Physiology, Department of Forestry and Natural Resources, Purdue University
William R. Chaney is Professor Emeritus of Tree Physiology at Purdue University in the Department of Forestry and Natural Resources. He received a B.S. in Plant and Soil Science from Texas A&M University and a Ph.D. in Botany and Forestry from the University of Wisconsin. He has authored more than 250 scientific articles and book chapters that have contributed to the basic understanding of tree growth including the 14 page section on Forestry and Forest Products for the current edition of the Encyclopedia Britannica. He has served as President of the ISA Arboriculture Research and Education Academy, member of the editorial board of Arboriculture & Urban Forestry and Chairman of the ISA Publication Committee. Bill was awarded the International Society of Arboriculture Author Citation Award for sustained excellence in publication of timely information for arborists. He is a recipient of the Charles Murphy Award for outstanding undergraduate teaching at Purdue University.
Ed Gilman, Ph.D., University of Florida
Dr. Gilman has received the prestigious Authors citation award in 1999 from the International Society of Arboriculture for his books and CD-ROMs on trees and landscape plants. He has received numerous other awards for his horticultural writing from the American Society for Horticultural Science. He received the Gunslogen Award in 2001 from the American Horticultural Society for his innovative work in developing software for the horticultural industry. Dr. Gilman serves the landscape industry and allied professions with his tireless teaching and research efforts nationwide.

Phil Graham, Jr., FASLA, AICP, LEED®AP is a registered landscape architect, a certified planner and a LEED Accredited Professional. He is a Fellow of the American Society of Landscape Architects, and a member of the American Institute of Certified Planners. He holds a Business Management degree from Eckerd College. He serves, by appointment of Governor Charlie Crist, on the Florida State Board of Landscape Architects. In addition to his professional endeavors, Mr. Graham has been an active participant in many civic, social and political causes for over thirty-five years.
Mr.Graham has been in private practice since 1967 and is the Managing Principal of Phil Graham Studio / ValleCrest Design Group in St. Petersburg, FL. His firm has completed over 3,500 projects, and has won many awards including the Florida Design Arts Award, the 1st Frederic B. Stresau Award given by the Florida Chapter of ASLA, and the International Spectrum Award, for the best tile design in the world, at the grand entrance of Tropicana Stadium.
Mr. Graham’s projects have appeared in Architectural Record, The Florida Architect, Florida Design, Florida Trend and Southern Living magazines, and in Landscaping in Florida, The Reader's Digest Home Improvement Manual and The Southern Living Landscape Book. He co-authored the FDOT Highway Landscape Guide and Video, a documentwhich sets statewide standards for landscape beautification on Florida's highways.

Robert Northrop, Extension Forester, University of Florida IFAS Extension
Robert Northrop is an extension forester with the University of Florida IFAS Extension in Hillsborough County where he focuses on teaching and applied research into the changing composition, structure and ecological function of Tampa Bay’s urbanizing forest. For 22 years he worked as technical watershed forestry leader for the State of Maryland in the Chesapeake Bay Restoration Program, served as Director of Governor’s Executive Committee on Trees and Forests in Maryland for policy and programmatic initiatives concerning tree and forest conservation and taught wildlife management, ecosystem management and the human dimensions of wildlife at the University of Delaware.
Shawn Landry, Interim Director, Florida Center for Community Design and Research, School of Architecture and Community Design
Shawn Landry is an Associate in Research Faculty and Interim Director of the Florida Center for Community Design and Research in the School of Architecture and Community Design at the University of South Florida. Landry studies the intersections between the social, built and natural urban environment using information technology to promote informed decisions about community development and resource management. Landry is a founder and investigator for the WaterAtlas.org, CommunityAtlas.org and PlantAtlas.org planning informatics applications. Designed to support sustainable development, these websites provide public access to scientific and educational information, including: water resource data; social, physical and environmental conditions of neighborhoods; and the spatial distribution and ecological characteristics of plants. Landry and his colleagues maintain and license these technologies for use by organizations worldwide. Landry has a background in plant ecology, spatial sciences (i.e. GIS, GPS, and remote sensing), rapid field mapping techniques, and e-government technologies. He and his team of research staff and students assist communities with modeling and mapping of the urban environment through a combination of technology transfer and research. His latest effort focuses on a spatial and ecological analysis of Tampa’s tree canopy and the development of a strategy for urban forest sustainability.Landry earned a Master of Science in Botany and a Master of Science in Management Information Systems at USF. He is currently pursuing a PhD in Environmental Science and Geography at USF. His dissertation will focus on the social and environmental factors influencing spatial and temporal heterogeneity of the urban forest.

Dr. Sudeep Vyapari is the Director and Program Manager of the Institute of Florida Studies, Hillsborough Community College. Dr. Vyapari earned his Ph.D. in Horticulture from Kansas State University. He has over 17 years of teaching and research experience in environmental horticulture with specific emphasis in urban landscape management. He is an accomplished speaker and has presented many talks on impact of soil, environment, water, nutrients, and other factors on establishment and post-establishment of urban landscapes. In his current role as Director of the Institute of Florida Studies he continues to promote environmental education and outreach activities.

Pete Dunnington, Certified Arborist, John Deere Landscapes
Pete Dunnington is an International Society of Arboriculture, ISA Certified Arborist with over 32 years in the landscape and nusery business. He was the state of Florida’s tree and plant buyer for John Deere Landscapes, and is currently their manager of direct sales. Mr. Dunnington has managed and grown tree material on 300 acres of balled and burlapped (B&B) and container material, hardwoods and palm trees and is responsible for the creation and development of 11 distribution centers in Florida over the 10 years.
